JUSTICE JOHN McKINLEY FEDERAL BUILDING
Named for Alabama's first United States Supreme Court Justice, John McKinley made his home in Florence, Alabama, from about 1821 to 1842.  Born May 1, 1780, in Culpepper County, Virginia, he dies July 19, 1852, and is buried in Louisville, Kentucky.  McKinley was an early settler of Huntsville, Alabama, and resided in the Howard Weeden Home.  As a member of the Cypress Land Company, he was one of the seven founders of Florence in 1818.  McKinley helped establish one of Florence's first schools and its first church, First Presbyterian Church.

 

LAUDERDALE COUNTY POST OFFICES
The first post office in Lauderdale County was established at Florence on December 18, 1827.  The mail was being delivered by stage coach coach in the early 1800's.  The trip from Nashville to Pope's Tavern took from five to seven days depending on the weather and the condition of General Andrew Jackson's Military Road.  In 1901, Lauderdale County had 37 post offices.  Many more post offices have been opened and closed since the first was established in Florence.

Archibald Ray was first Postmaster.  The name was changed to Anderson 1i 1896.  Service transferred to Rogersville in early 1900's before being restored in 1920.  There is still a post office operating in Anderson.
Arnot Opened: 1902 Closed: 1905
Located about four miles south of Green Hill, near the Lone Cedar community
Atlas Opened: About 1890 Closed: 1906
Situated about half way between Green Hill and Killen
Arthur Opened: 1886 Closed: 1907
Arkdale Opened: 1901 Closed: 1907
Arkdale located on the east side of Blue Water Creek, east of Green Hill.  When closed, mail routed to Loretto, TN
Bailey's Springs Opened: 1854 Closed: 1901
Jonathan Baily first Postmaster.  The post office was closed and reopened at least three times before final closure in 1901.  Mail routed to St Florian.
Belew Opened: 1889 Closed: 1905
An early community located on Blue Water Creek near the Tennessee line.  Mail routed to Loretto, TN
Birchum Opened: 1880 Closed: 1881
Burcham Mills Opened: 1890 Closed: 1903
Located near Central Heights.
Canal Opened: 1883 Closed: 1884
Center Star Opened: 1850 Closed: 1914
William Tapp first Postmaster.  The original spelling was "Centre Star".  The post office opened and closed several times before final closing in 1914.
Cherry Grove Opened: 1841 Closed: 1850
The town was originally called "Cornishis" and later Green Hill.
Cloverdale Opened: 1889 Closed: Still Operating
The town was originally called "Waveland" and later "Rawhide".
Comer Opened: 1880 Closed: 1895
Robert T Lanier first Postmaster.  The area is near Lexington.
Cornishis Opened: 1830 Closed: 1834
George Kennedy first Postmaster.  The name was changed to "Cherry Grove" in 1841 and later to "Green Hill".
Cotton Gin Opened:  Closed: 
This post office existed about five years.  It is thought to have been in the upper Blue Water Creek area.
Covington Opened: 1875 Closed: 1897
Covingtons, Crittendens, and Thorntons served as Postmasters.  After closing, mail sent to Rogersville.
Dart Opened: 1899 Closed: 1908
Located on the Savannah Highway near the Tennessee line.
East Florence Opened: 1894 Closed: 1900
Located in Sullivan's Drug Store.
Eastep Opened: 1890 Closed: 1902
Solomon Eastep first Postmaster.  Located a few miles north of Rogersville.
Elgin Opened: 1901 Closed: 1905
Now called Elgin Crossroads.  It was originally called Marmion and then Ingrams Crossroads.
Florence Opened: 1818 Closed: Still operating
John Craig first Postmaster.  Replaced by James H Weakley in 1827.
Gravelly Springs Opened: 1842 Closed: 1907
Ross Houston, brother of Alabama governor, George S Houston, first Postmaster.
Green Hill Opened: 1850 Closed: 1906
Originally called Cornishis, then Cherry Grove.  The community of Green Hill was named for a hero of the Mexican War, Green B Hill.  His brother-in-law, Charles McCluskey was first Postmaster.  Daniel F Killen was the last Postmaster.
Haddock Opened: 1890 Closed: 1906
Located west of Waterloo.
Hines Opened: 1892 Closed: 1931
Originally known as Webster.  Located near Indian Camp Creek and the old L&N Railroad in the north central part of Lauderdale County.
Hope Opened: 1893  Closed: 1905
Hope located north of Florence on Jim Olive Road about one mile south of the Tennessee line, near Bethel Church.
Ingrams  Cross Roads Opened: ?? Closed: 1857
George Ingram first Postmaster.  Area originally called Marmion.
Jacksonburg Opened: 1889 Closed: 1924
Post office opened and closed several times before final closure in 1924.  Jacksonburg is located just off Chisholm Road, north of Florence.
Kendell Opened: 1890 Closed: 1908
Located about half way between Threets Cross Roads and Cloverdale.
Cloverdale Opened: 1880 Closed: 1895

Killen Opened: 1896 Closed: Still operating
James S Killen, for whom the town is named, was the first Postmaster.  
Kingman Opened: 1899 Closed: 1913
Post operated for five years before being closed for three years.  It was located near Killen.

Post office operated for one year.  Dates unknown.
Lexington Opened: 1832 Closed: Still operating
Felix A Westmoreland first Postmaster.  The post office was located in a store belonging to Edwin B Westmoreland, who became second Postmaster.  The post office was closed twice following the Civil War before service was restored in 1874.
Little Cypress Opened: February 1856 Closed: May 1856
Samuel O Johnson first (and only) Postmaster.
Marmion Opened: ?? Closed: 1849
James M Boston, James Williams, and George M Ingram were three of Marmion Postmasters.  Name was changed to Ingrams Cross Roads in 1849.
Masonville Opened: 1826 Closed: 1866
Four Postmasters served at this post office.  It was located at the intersection of Highway 72 and Old Lexington Road.
Mecca Opened: 1898 Closed: 1902
Mecca located near Green Hill and Cow Pea Creek.
Oakland Opened: ?? Closed: 1905
Samuel Vaughn first Postmaster.  Closed for a time after the Civil War.  Located about eight miles west of Florence.
Oliver Opened: 1894 Closed: 1909
Located between Rogersville and the Elk River.

Post office operated about one year.  Located south of Center Hill.
Pruitton Opened: 1883 Closed: 1923
Closed for a brief time in 1920 - 1921.  Pruitton located near Butler Creek about thirteen miles north of Florence.
Rawhide Opened: 1874 Closed: 1889
The community of Rawhide from Waveland in 1874.  It became Cloverdale in 1889.
Rhodesville Opened: 1889 Closed: 1907
Columbus Rhodes first Postmaster.  Located on Waterloo Road, about fifteen miles west of Florence.
Rogersville Opened: 1830 Closed: Still operating
Postmasters have included several generations of Haraways and Fuquas.  Rogersville is second oldest post office in Lauderdale County.

Columbus Smith first Postmaster.  Name is applied to what was formerly Cave Spring and Cheatham's Ferry.  It is located in the "Bend of the River".

Located in the northeastern part of the county.
Threet Opened: 1898 Closed: 1908
James C and John W Bevis first Postmasters.  Now called Threet's Cross Roads, the community is north of the Savannah and west of the Natchez Trace Parkway.
Waveland Opened: 1872 Closed: 1874
Town name changed to Rawhide in 1874 and later to Cloverdale.
