CHICOT COUNTY SEATS Chicot County, created in 1823 as the tenth county of Arkansas, chose Villemont as its first county seat. In 1833, because of erosion at Villemont by the Mississippi River. Columbia became the seat of justice. Columbia suffered the same fate as did Villemont and was replaced by Masona, located away from the river. No county business was conducted at Masona, and two years later in 1857 Lake Village became the permanent seat of government. |

ITALIAN IMMIGRANTS ON SUNNYSIDE
PLANTATION In 1895 Austin Corbin, a New York banker and land developer, working with immigration officials brought 100 families from north central Italy to grow cotton at Sunnyside, a plantation located between the Mississippi River and Lake Chicot. These Italians struggled against exploitation, prejudice and language barriers, and many died of malaria and other lowland diseases. Many of their descendents are now among the leading citizens of Arkansas and the nation. |
