HISTORY OF MURRAY COUNTY
Cherokee lands divided 1832
One division of Cherokee County was called Murray County
County named for Georgia statesman Thomas W Murray
Murray served as Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives
What is now Dade, Walker, Catoosa, Whitfield, Gordon and part of Bartow were Murray County
Spring Place was selected as the county seat
White settlers began entering the county 1838-39
Area was mostly undisturbed during Civil War
Talc deposits discovered in area 1870’s
L & N Railroad ran a line along the mountain foothills the entire length of county 1906
Railroad missed Spring Place and town began to die
County seat moved to Chatsworth 1912
Carters Community
Few signs remain of the old community
Probably the oldest continuously inhabited site in Murray County
DeSoto found an Indian town there in 1540
Cherokees called area Coosawattee which meant “old town”
Farish Carter bought the John Martin home after the Indian removal
Carter accumulated thousands of acres of land most of which is still owned by descendants
His wealth inspired the expression “More money than Carter had oats”
Carter’s Dam and Cartersville named after Farish Carter
His home called Carter’s Quarters
Is privately owned by family
Listed on Register of Historic Places
Dennis Mill
Located at Ramhurst off Hwy 411 south of Chatsworth
Mill built by Dennis Johnson before the Civil War
The mill, now privately owned, operated into the 1930’s
Spring Place
Established 1801 as a Moravian mission to the Cherokees
Post office established 1819
Is second oldest post office in Georgia
It is believed the first Christmas Tree in the state was at the mission in 1805
Century old houses preserved in town
Spring Place incorporated 1934

Donated to Federal Government by Ivan Allen, Sr. in 1929

The Wall

Park named after rock wall measuring 855 feet long
Wall stands on highest point of a mountain
Old stone tower also located on mountain
Thought to have been built as fortification or for ceremonies
Wall runs east & west
Sun rises on one end of the wall and sets on the other
Wall probably served some religious purpose
No artifacts have been found in or around the wall
Circular pits built into wall at approximately 30 foot intervals
Height of wall varies from 2 feet to 6 feet
Archaeologists believe wall was originally higher
Believed to have been built by a tribe of unknown Indians around 500 AD
Another theory speculates that wall built by Welsh explorers in 14th century
Wall was fortification against hostile Indian tribes
Ancient Cherokee legend refers to the “Moon Eyes” as wall builders
