| HISTORY OF MURRAY COUNTY |
| Cherokee lands divided 1832 One division of Cherokee County was called Murray County County named for Georgia statesman Thomas W Murray Murray served as Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives What is now Dade, Walker, Catoosa, Whitfield, Gordon and part of Bartow were Murray County Spring Place was selected as the county seat White settlers began entering the county 1838-39 Area was mostly undisturbed during Civil War Talc deposits discovered in area 1870’s L & N Railroad ran a line along the mountain foothills the entire length of county 1906 Railroad missed Spring Place and town began to die County seat moved to Chatsworth 1912 |

Carters Community Few signs remain of the old community Probably the oldest continuously inhabited site in Murray County DeSoto found an Indian town there in 1540 Cherokees called area Coosawattee which meant “old town” Farish Carter bought the John Martin home after the Indian removal Carter accumulated thousands of acres of land most of which is still owned by descendants His wealth inspired the expression “More money than Carter had oats” Carter’s Dam and Cartersville named after Farish Carter His home called Carter’s Quarters Is privately owned by family Listed on Register of Historic Places |
