KOREAN WAR MEMORIAL
Dedicated August 20, 1992.  To all those who served, and those who gave their lives and saved a nation.  Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force

On the morning of June 25, 1950 the vanguard of ninety thousand Korean soldiers from the Communist country of North Korea plunged south into the Republic of South Korea.  Striking with great precision, the Communist North Korean divisions had little difficulty overwhelming the surprised and outnumbered defenders.

The United Nations organization pledged to defend all nations from aggression could not ignore this invasion.  The U N Security Council called an emergency session, and a few days later the United States began to rush troops and supplies to embattled South Korea.  Other member nations quickly sent troops and material.

For the first time in history troops of a world organization were acting as a "Police Force" to fight an aggressor nation. 

At ten o'clock in the morning of July 27, 1953 the armistice agreement was signed after three years of the bloodiest fighting in history.

A two and a-half mile no mans land demilitarized zone stretches along the 88th parallel.  Since 1953 hostilities have resulted in 58 Americans K I A, and 184 W I A, defending the DMZ.  Another 32 died in the Sea of Japan, for a total of 90 killed by North Koreans.
