JEFFERSONVILLE, INDIANA
HISTORY OF JEFFERSONVILLE

GENERAL LA FAYETTE
Was the official guest of the State of Indiana at Jeffersonville on May 12, 1825 at the house of former governor Posey on the west corner of Front and Fort Streets.  He was welcomed by the Governor of the state by a committee of the General Assembly by citizens of Jeffersonville and by veterans of the War of the Revolution.
As commemorative of that visit and in enduring gratitude for his services in that war as an American General in the field, and in enlisting the support of France at critical periods, this tablet has been erected by the Society of Indiana Pioneers, The Daughters of the American Revolution, the sons of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames of America in Indiana.

HISTORICAL OVERVIEW

Jeffersonville lies in the grant awarded to General George Rogers Clark for his services to Virginia in the Revolutionary War.  A Strategic river location and good railroad facilities made our city an important commercial and manufacturing center.  The original plan for Jeffersonville was drawn up by President Thomas Jefferson.  Although the plan was not implemented, it was perhaps the first city designed by a sitting President.
Downtown Jeffersonville is home to an outstanding array of architectural styles.  Examples of the Federal, Queen Anne Cottage, Italianate, Craftsman Bungalow, Shotgun and Free Classic styles can be found throughout the Historic District.

The historic district also has a wonderful collection of churches built during the late nineteenth century.  The Deutsche Bischoflich Methodist Kirche, Christian Church and St Paul Episcopal Church are noteworthy examples of the Gothic Revival style.  St Augustine Catholic Church, a beautiful example of Mission architecture, is a style rarely found in this area.
