BEDFORD, KENTUCKY

 

COUNTY NAMED, 1836
For Robert Trimble, U S Supreme Court Justice, 1826 - 1828.  Appointed by President John Quincy Adams.  Born in Virginia 1777.  Came to Kentucky 1780.  Captain, Bourbon Company regiment, 1796.  Practiced law in Paris, Kentucky, 1800.  Member State Legislature, 1802 - 1804.  Kentucky Court of Appeals, 1807 - 1809.  U S District Attorney, 1813 - 1817.  U S District Judge from 1817 - 1826.  Died in 1828.  Buried at Paris, Kentucky.

TRIMBLE COUNTY COURTHOUSE

TRIMBLE COUNTY JAIL
Old stone jail erected ca 1850 on site of original jail; second story added in 1899.  For some 133 years, until 1983, this building was a physical symbol of law and order in Trimble County.  Its most noted prisoner, ardent abolitionist Delia Webster, was incarcerated here briefly during 1854.  The jail is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
