CARROLLTON, KENTUCKY

 

HISTORY OF CARROLLTON

PORT WILLAIM
Benjamin Craig and James Hawkins established Port William 1794.  Name changed 1838 to Carrollton in honor of Charles Carroll.

COLONEL WILLIAM PEACHY
Colonel William Peachy was granted 2000 acres of land at the confluence of the Kentucky & Ohio Rivers in 1763 for military service.

CARROLLTON
First settled 1792, incorporated as Port William 1794, Carroll County formed and name of the town changed to Carrollton by the Kentucky Legislature, 1838, both honoring "Charles Carroll of Carrollton" of Maryland, bold signer of the Declaration of Independence.

SCOTT'S BLOCK HOUSE
Blockhouse built here, 1789, by General Charles Scott for protection of settlers against Indians who had massacred and driven off earlier families.  Scott came from Virginia 1785.  He was in the French and Indian Wars.  Organized first company south of James River in the Revolution.  Indian fighter in Battle of Fallen Timbers, 1794.  Governor of Kentucky 1808 - 1812.

OLD KENTUCKY RIVER TOLL BRIDGE
The Old Kentucky River Toll Bridge first surveyed November 1897 and incorporated November 1898.  J F Jett, M I Barker, John J Orr, and Martin L Downs were instrumental in obtaining bridge.  Contract was let to Indiana Bridge Company, July 1899.  Contract was let to Indiana Bridge Company, July 1899.  Bridge completed 1900.  Conveyed to Commonwealth of Kentucky by State Highway Commission, 1932.

 

DOGWOODS OF CARROLLTON
In comic lore there existed Lil Abner's town of Dogpatch... in Carrollton there exists an area that could lovingly be called Dogwood.  The splendor of the Dogwood in Carrollton is a grand gift of nature.

CARROLL COUNTY COURTHOUSES
There have been four Courthouses:  1798, 1808, 1840 and the current Courthouse built in 1884.
