Fort Jackson, Louisiana

Fort Jackson proved to be an interesting stop on the way back from Venice to New Orleans.

FORT JACKSON Built 1822 - 1832 to protect the lower river.  Named for Andrew Jackson.  In 1862, fort withstood 10 day siege by Farraqut and surrendered after city fell.  In 1898 and 1917 - 1918 used as training base.  In 1961 fort was declared a national monument.
