  Mississippi River Scenes Along the Trail
Trail presently 40 miles long
Root River Valley and Southern Minnesota Railroad chartered 1855
Their purpose was to construct a railroad from Hokah west to Missouri River
Construction began in Hokah, 1865
A 162 mile line called Grand Crossing ended at Mississippi River opposite La Crosse, WI
Southern Minnesota Railroad declared bankruptcy 1871
Chicago, Milwaukee, St Paul Railroad purchased railroad 1880
The Milwaukee Railroad abandoned the tracks in the 1970’s
Road bed acquired by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources 1981
Black-topping of first section began 1985
28 miles completed 1988
Trail extended one mile west into Fountain 1993
Trail paved six miles east of Rushford toward Houston 1994
Five miles extended into Preston 1995
