Beginning on May 16, 1863, General U S Grant held city under siege, cutting off all supplies and driving citizens to caves to escape shells.  C S A General John C Pemberton finally surrendered July 4.

On a February day in 1861, as Jefferson and Varina Davis pruned their favorite rose, "The Glory of France," in the garden of Brierfield, their plantation home several miles south of Vicksburg, a messenger arrived with the news that Mr Davis had been elected president of the Confederate states of America.  He left the next day for the inauguration and he and Mrs Davis forever took their places of honor on the pages of history.  In memory of Ceress Hyland Newell (1929 - 1997)

OLD NATCHEZ DISTRICT
Ceded by Choctaws & Chickasaws in Fort Adams Treaty, 1801, confirming earlier British treaty.  Contained most of present Warren, Jefferson, Claiborne, Adams, Franklin, Wilkinson & Amite counties

VICKSBURG
Founded 1820 and named for the Reverend Newitt Vick.  Was originally site of Spanish Ft Nogales.  Later was U S Ft McHenry.  On July 4, 1863, the city surrendered to General Grant.

MISSISSIPPI DENTAL ASSOCIATION
On April 21, 1875, the Mississippi Dental Association was organized in Vicksburg at the office of Dr J B Askew and Dr J D Miles on Washington Street.  Dr J d Miles became its first president.

SOUTH CENTRAL BELL  (1881 - 1981)
The first telephone exchange in Mississippi was installed in Vicksburg, January 10, 1881, at 102-1/2 North Washington Street by the Louisiana Telephone Company, a predecessor of South Central Bell.

Made in 1863 by the Phoenix Iron Company, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania.  Property of the Vicksburg and Warren County Historical Society.  The original carriages were made of white oak and iron.  These, made around 1915, are of iron and concrete.

SOLDIERS
We were that which others did not want to be.  We went where others feared to go, and did what others failed to do.  we were... AMERICA  SOLDIERS.  This monument is dedicated to the honor of the men of Company B, 106th Engineer (Combat) Battalion, 31st Infantry (Dixie) Division, Mississippi National Guard.  A unit of Vicksburg and Warren County soldiers that served with distinction during World War II, from November 1940 through December, 1945.  Erected by:  Company B, 106th Engineers Association.  Dedicated November 28, 1992.

MISSISSIPPI RIVER COMMISSION BUILDING
The building, completed in 1884 and expanded to its present size in 1914, is perhaps the finest example of  Romanesque architecture in Mississippi.  It originally served as a post office and customs house and became headquarters for the U S Army Corps of Engineers Mississippi River Commission and Mississippi Valley Division in 1944.

U S ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS HEADQUARTERS  MISSISSIPPI RIVER COMMISSION  MISSISSIPPI VALLEY DIVISION
The mission of the U S Army Corps of Engineers in the Mississippi Valley is accomplished by two complementary programs.  The Mississippi River Commission (MRC) is responsible for evaluating projects that impact the Mississippi River from Canada to the Gulf, as well as the comprehensive Mississippi River  and Tributaries flood control and navigation project.  The Mississippi Valley Division (MVD) conducts and implements the Corps' water resources development and environmental programs within Division boundaries.  The operations directed by the MRC and MVD  are performed by district offices in St Paul, MN, Rock Island, IL, St Louis, MO, Memphis, TN, Vicksburg, MS, and New Orleans, LA.
