wpe8A.jpg (6406 bytes) Headed for down town Great Falls, Montana.   Drove through the town and saw a few significant historic buildings, but decided to focus on the Rivers Edge Bicycle Trail that runs along the Missouri River.   It turned out to be a great choice, and one of the premier bicycle trails that I have had the opportunity to ride.

The trail starts near the middle of town and passes by an old depot and along a greenway.  Horseshoes must be big in Great Falls as noted by the big pitching area. wpe98.jpg (4444 bytes) wpe9F.jpg (4827 bytes)

More scenes along the trail... a  Dinosaur egg?? wpeB0.jpg (3326 bytes) I noticed thunder storms in the area when I first got on the trail.   I was almost to the first dam and falls when one finally caught up with me.   The lightning was pretty severe and real close, and it started raining real hard!   I found shelter under a concrete picnic table... it was certainly better than nothing, but just barely.

Just before reaching the first dam, I saw this interesting railroad bridge.  Note the checkered field way off on the horizon

Just past the railroad bridge, the path led to the dam at Black Eagle Falls. wpeB1.jpg (9698 bytes) If you guessed that the town acquired its name from waterfalls, then you guessed right.  Two spectacular falls are located along this trail.  I use many pictures to try and describe their awesome beauty.

And the Mighty Missouri rolls on toward the Mississippi River.   This view is down river from the Black Eagle Falls.

I pass by the remains of a "Roaster Stack".  I don't know what they were roasting, but it looked old.  Rainbow Falls was the next quest.   Lewis and Clark in their early exploration liked this one... and so did I.

A look at the dam reveals massive water discharges from two sides with major falls below the dam. wpeDB.jpg (7068 bytes) wpeDF.jpg (5269 bytes) wpeE0.jpg (4424 bytes)

A long range overlook at Rainbow Falls, and trails end, although it continues as a mountain bike trail for a few more miles.
The camera telephoto lens caught another small waterfall called Crooked Falls down river from the end of the paved trail. wpeDA.jpg (7681 bytes) wpeD6.jpg (7610 bytes)
