The focus of our adventure the next day was to conquer Mt Hood, a landmark that dominates the skyline of Portland, Oregon.

On the way to the "Big Mountain", we drove many miles along a scenic white water creek.  Rocks with character are really hard to find in this part of the country, so we stopped several times along the creek to bag a few... but to no avail.  We did, however, bag a few vivid memories with the many wild flowers of the area.

To the four year old's utter delight, we found ripe huckleberries along the side of the road and we stopped a couple of times to indulge in natures bounty.

We finally arrived at the parking lot of an old historic lodge that provided food and shelter for a year around snow ski area.  It was a steep climb at about 8,000 feet of elevation to the lodge, and the four year old was puffing and panting.  We still had not touched snow during our whole trip, and the eight year old was determined to bag some.  With bag in hand, he traversed some real steep grade for the final push to the snow summit.

The trip back down provided a good view of the lodge, and a multitude of wild flowers splashed across the mountain. wpe94E.jpg (6442 bytes) wpe965.jpg (7821 bytes) wpe972.jpg (6710 bytes)

At the top of his climb, Paul collected two snow balls in a zip lock bag.  Before we began the long journey back to the "turtle shell" at Peach Beach, we paused for a snow ball fight in the parking lot. wpe96F.jpg (3164 bytes) wpe970.jpg (3476 bytes)
