BADLANDS, SOUTH DAKOTA
We woke up this morning 952 miles from home and thinking it was Wednesday.  It was immediately decided that we needed to start marking off a calendar when we discovered it was actually Thursday. Time flies when you're having fun!

After replacing a headlight in the Tracker, we gathered up our "stuff" and headed west on Interstate 90.  The terrain was rather flat and boring until we crossed the Missouri River.  The rolling hills became more rolling and it began to look like the west. 

About 2:00 PM we left I-90 and headed into the "Badlands" of South Dakota.  What appears to be spires of rock are actually giant mud castles with little rock content.  We breezed through the park, out the other side, and to the Badlands KOA Campground where we checked in.

 Our first thought was to go back and tour the park some more, but we couldn't pick up rocks.  We were in a "rock-picking-up" mode, so we decided to hunt around the edges of the Park.  It had just rained, and the mud/rock castles piled up on our feet like a gray glue.  When we retreated to the campground next to the White River, we found some interesting rocks along the beaches, and bagged a few.

Under the bridge next to the campground where we found the rocks, we also found thousands of clay bird nests... complete with birds.

The next morning after leaving the campground behind, we again entered the park, and drove through several miles of unending scenery before reaching I-90 west. wpe8AA.jpg (3368 bytes) wpe8A9.jpg (2970 bytes) To follow is a  picture of a composite of the Badlands that is in the must-see category
