KEYSTONE, SOUTH DAKOTA

We landed for the next two nights in Keystone, South Dakota, an entry point to Mt Rushmore National Park.  The operator of the RV park told us about an old tin mine up the road a bit, and as soon as we had the RV set up, we were off in a cloud of dust.  Paul walked far up the old road leading to the mine, but darkness halted the advance on the mine.  We did find some interesting mica and quartz samples on the way up the road.  When we arrived back at base camp, we were greeted with one of the most colorful sunsets on record.

To follow is a  picture of a composite that is in the must-see category

The next day, we made another assault on the mine, and found a whole new world of rock collecting.  The attack carried us up about a half mile of steep gulled hauling road, and the four year old had to be coaxed up the path with visions of the ultimate rocks, to finally make it to the mine.

A wooden dragon guarded the entrance to the mine tailings, but we still prevailed.  The views on the way up were worth the hike.

The four year old likes B-I-G rocks... even though she knows there are strict size limits on what she can pick up.  It was a good thing it was down hill to the Tracker, because the back pack ranneth over with rocks.

DOWNTOWN KEYSTONE, South Dakota as seen on 7/24/00

The town of Keystone was unique in its own right, so Paul decided to do a mini-Trav Guide on the town.  There is one main street, and composite pictures show both sides of that street. wpe897.jpg (7584 bytes) wpe8D9.jpg (7615 bytes) wpe8DB.jpg (6302 bytes)
