ASHLAND CITY, TENNESSEE

HISTORY of ASHLAND CITY

City organized on 50 acres of land in1856
Named after the abundance of ash trees
Incorporated in 1859

DOWNTOWN ASHLAND CITY

CHEATHAM COUNTY COURTHOUSE
Located on this three-acre site, the original 42' x 38' brick structure was completed in 1869 at a cost of $12,000. The first floor offices and the courtroom on the second floor of the original structure are still in use today. The front addition, designed by architect R E Turbeville, was added in 1914 at a cost of $25,000. On December 12, 1976, the courthouse was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

A two-story frame courthouse was completed on the corner of Main and Cumberland Streets in 1858
First permanent courthouse was built in 1869
It was built on a 300 x 600 foot lot in downtown Ashland City

The original brick building was 42 x 48 feet and of classic Georgian design
The building cost $12,000 and contained a courtroom and county offices
The original portion of the courthouse is still in use today
An addition was added at a cost of $25,000 in 1914
