HISTORY of CLAY COUNTY
Established June 24, 1870
Formed from Jackson and Overton Counties
Celina is county seat

 

One of the few remaining predominately African-American Settlements
A slaveholder, Virginia Hill, purchased 2,000 acres of Clay County land between 1830 and 1850
All slaves were released before the Civil War
Was a refuge for fleeing slaves during Civil War
The area was referred to as "Free Hill" because of owners name and the hills of the land
First school in community held in old church building until late 1920's
At its peak Free Hill had 300 residents, two grocery stores, two cafes and two churches
Community cemetery tombstones date back to 1860's
Second Sunday of July community has a three day homecoming
Free Hill Community
Three acres of land purchased for new school 1928
Free Hill Rosenwald School built from 1929-30 with aid of Julius Rosenwald Fund
Structure contained two classrooms, cafeteria, and indoor rest rooms
Grades 1 to 8 held in school
High school students bussed to Cookeville after 1964
School closed 1966
Building now serves as a community center
Listed on National Registry of Historic Places
Free Hill School

Moved to county as a youngster from Pickett County
Early education at Montvale Institute in Celina
Was first school in Clay County
Entered senior class in law at Cumberland University in Lebanon
Practiced law in Celina
Served as captain in Spanish-American War
Elected to U S Congress 1906 to 1920 and 1923 to 1931
Became Secretary of State 1933 to 1944
Awarded Nobel Peace Prize 1945
Know as "Father of the United Nations"

Project begun May, 1963 and completed November 1973
Named for Cordell Hull, Secretary of State for Franklin Roosevelt, 1933 to 1944
Awarded Nobel Peace Prize, 1945
Lake located on Cumberland River
Flows through Smith, Jackson and Clay counties
Dam located in Smith County at river mile 313.5 from mouth
Lake 67.3 miles long and has 381 miles of shoreline

Project completed by Corps of Army Engineers, 1943
40,000 acre lake
620 miles of shoreline
World record small mouth bass caught, weighing 11 pounds, 15 ounces
Trout fishing available in Obey River below dam
Located near base of Dale Hollow Dam
Established 1965
Produces rainbow, brown, and lake trout
Visitors are welcomed to view the hatchery facility and small aquarium
