1870 Formed from Jackson and Overton Counties Celina is county seat |
| One of the few remaining
predominately African-American Settlements A slaveholder, Virginia Hill, purchased 2,000 acres of Clay County land between 1830 and 1850 All slaves were released before the Civil War Was a refuge for fleeing slaves during Civil War The area was referred to as "Free Hill" because of owners name and the hills of the land First school in community held in old church building until late 1920's At its peak Free Hill had 300 residents, two grocery stores, two cafes and two churches Community cemetery tombstones date back to 1860's Second Sunday of July community has a three day homecoming |
