HISTORY of COFFEE COUNTY

County once known as "The Barrens" due to poor soil

Established 1836.  Named in honor of Major General John Coffee.  Soldier, surveyor and close friend of Andrew Jackson.  Tennessee troops under his command took a decisive part in the New Orleans Campaign, December 23,1814 to January 3, 1815.

COFFEE COUNTY

On June 14, 1865, Union forces under Rosecrans overpowered Confederate defenders of Hoover's Gap, commanded by Stewart Bate and Bushrod Johnson.  This was the beginning of Bragg's withdrawal to Chattanooga.  Unknown soldiers who fell in the battle are buried in the cemetery to the southeast.

BEECH GROVE ENGAGEMENT

On June 30, 1865, south of here, at Bobo's Crossroads, Colonel Starnes, 4the Tennessee Cavalry, CSA, then commanding Forrest's Old Brigade, was killed in a skirmish while his brigade was screening the withdrawal of Army of Tennessee from Tullahoma to the Chattanooga area.

WATTENDORF MEMORIAL HIGHWAY
The access highway to AEDC is renamed June 1, 1997 in honor of Dr Frank L Wattendorf.  A distinguished engineer and scientist and a pioneer in the development of aeronautical technology.  The futuristic concepts which led to the creation of the Arnold Engineering Development Center were a product of his exceptional foresight, wisdom and dedication.  In the closing days of World War II, Dr Wattendorf, a founding member of General :"Hap" Arnold's scientific advisory group, inspected captured test facilities which supported Germany's major technological advances in aircraft and missiles. On his way home, he wrote his famous "Trans-Atlantic Memo, which proposed a new test center to guarantee preeminent U S Airpower.  His proposal became the blueprint for AEDC.

The present development and future prospects of high speed jet airplanes are associated with an urgent need for forward-looking advances in research and test facilities for high-speed aerodynamics, propulsion systems and component parts... the scope of the German planes makes it essential that our own plans be certainly not less ambitious in the light of our future security... it is recommended that consideration and study be given the establishment of a new Air Forces Research and Development Center.  From a Trans-Atlantic Memo of June 19, 1945.

LIEUTENANT GENERAL ROBERT M BOND (December 16, 1929 - April 26, 1984)
This F-105 Thunder-Chief is dedicated in memory of Lieutenant General Robert M Bond who died in service to his country.  General Bond flew the F-105 both as a test pilot and combat pilot.  As Vice-Commander of Air Force Systems Command, we was ever mindful of the importance of simulated flight testing, and made many important contributions to this center and its people.

Rutledge Falls

Sinking pond was nominated for consideration as a national natural landmark by the National Park Service by Dr H R DeSelm, University of Tennessee in 1973.  It was accepted for registration by the U S Department of Interior in 1975.  Sinking Pond received national registration for the Society of American Foresters as a registered research natural area in 1975.  Sinking Pond is a 394 acre site containing 149 acres of bottom land hardwoods in a karst area which also contains a small pure stand of overcup oak.
This area is a virgin swamp forest with secondary fringing upland forests typical of the highland rim of Tennessee and Pennyroyal of Kentucky.  It is a superior example of the swamps so characteristic of the eastern highland rim.  Sinking Pond also contains one of the largest Great Blue Heron (Arden Herodias) nesting colonies in the state of Tennessee
