| HISTORY of MADISON |
| Near this spot on the Cumberland River the missionary boat of Edison White, "The Morning Star", moored for repairs in 1904. While the boat was being repaired, Ellen G White and W O Palmer went up the bank to look at a farm for sale called the Nelson Place. On returning, Ellen White said to E A Sutherland and P T Magan, "The Lord wants you to have this place and start a school here." Thus began Madison College and a little later Madison Sanitarium and Hospital. |
|
MADISON SCHOOL |
| Madison College was founded in 1904 as Nashville Agricultural Normal Institute by Seventy-day Adventists on a farm of 412 acres. A sanitarium and campus industries were integral to the plan of work and study for students training for careers in agriculture, teaching, religion, industrial arts, nursing and allied health courses, and other fields. |

| PEOPLE of MADISON |
| Two miles east on Cumberland River was Neely's Lick, later called Larkin's Sulphur Spring. Here in the fall of 1780, William Neely was killed and his daughter Mary captured by Indians. Carried by her captors to Michigan, she escaped after two years, and made her way to New York State, and thence eventually to her home here. |
