Nashville's first (1883) professional baseball was played in the Athletic Park which formerly occup9ed this block.  Traditionally baseball was introduced in Nashville in 1862 by soldiers of the Union Army of occupation who played the game here.  This low-lying area, originally called Sulphur Spr9ing Bottom, was called "Sulphur Dell" by local sports writer, Grantland Rice.  In 1963 this was the oldest playing grounds still in use in professional baseball.

THE METRO CENTER LEVEE TRAIL

The Metro Center Levee, part of the Cumberland River Greenway system, is a delightful lightly used get away for bicycling, roller-blading, running or for a simple leisurely walk.  The almost three mile paved path atop a levee in North Nashville provides an almost level surface with the Cumberland River on one side and an up-scale commercial development on the other side.  All of the roads in the development are wide and flat, providing additional adventure to those who crave a few additional miles of exercise.  On the weekends, the auto traffic is very light.

A HISTORY OF METRO CENTER

THE NASHVILLE RACE COURSE
The Nashville Race Course, the "Burns Island Track, 1828 - 1884, was 0.6 of a mile north.  Here October 10, 1843 was run the then richest race in the world, the $35,000 Peyton Stakes, 4 mile heats, promoted by Bailie Peyton.  The winner owned by Thomas Kirkman, was renamed "Peytona."  Ten Broeck and Thora also raced here.

The trail is easily accessible from I-240 and acres of parking await your arrival... so leave those worry's at home.  We begin the adventure at the "I-65 Trailhead".  From the parking area, a small rise leads to the top of the levee... and we are "off like a herd of turtles".  The scenery locations are tracked by the mileage on the bicycle odometer.

LOOKING AT LITTLE THINGS ALONG THE TRAIL...
"Stop and Smell the Roses" is phrase we all are familiar with... but few of us heed.  For many who stop long enough to seek out and experience this wonderful trail... really don't stop long enough to witness natures bounty in the enrichment of our lives.  For those who didn't... I have.
