HISTORY of CHARLOTTE AREA

BATTLE OF NASHVILLE
Calvary Action, December 15, 1864
Forming the outer arc of the Federal main attack, R W Johnson's 6th Cavalry Division, Wilson's Corps, here hit Rucker's Confederate Cavalry Brigade, west of Richland Creek.  Withdrawing south to Harding Road.  Rucker held there until by-passing Federal infantry forced further withdrawal to Hillsboro Pike late in the afternoon.

RICHLAND
0.8 mile north James Robertson built a station of the Cumberland Settlement prior to 1784.  Around 1785 he built there one of the first brick houses in middle Tennessee, living meanwhile in a log house which stood about one mile northwest of here.  The brick house, first called Travelers Rest, was named Richland about 1816.  It burned in 1902.

TSUS RESERVE OFFICERS' TRAINING CORPS
Established in April 1919, the Reserve Officers' Corps at Tennessee State University (then Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial State Normal School) was one of the first ROTC units at an African-American college.  Under First Lieutenant Grant Stuart, emphasis was placed on military science and preparing African-American officers as leaders.
