STONES RIVER GREENWAY TRAIL stones14.jpg (42046 bytes)

With ten miles of paved trail (not continuous yet), breathtaking views, bridges, picnic pavilions, forests and stream banks, the Stones River Greenway offers one of Nashville's most unique outdoor experiences.  Beginning at the Percy Priest dam and following the historic Stones River corridor, the meandering path connects neighborhoods, schools, parks, shopping areas and historic sites.  A journey along this route reveals a glimpse of the rich and diverse history of the river and land around it, from ancient Native Americans and early European settlers, the days of Andrew Jackson to the development of today, the Stones River has helped shape the land and lives of this community.

stones23.jpg (22676 bytes)

President Andrew Jackson pictured here on "Sam Patch", had a great love of horses.  In fact, his home track that once occupied land along the greenway route was the scene of many famed races.

The Clover Bottom Mansion, shown here circa 1928, has long been a major landmark along the Stones River.  Today, the mansion houses the Tennessee Historical Commission offices.

Mr A F Stanford, owner of the Clover Bottom farm during the early 20th century, spend a great deal of time exploring the Stones River on the houseboat he built.  In this 1927 photo he and a family friend relax on the bow of the boat.

stones26.jpg (37306 bytes)

Through the early 20th century, Crowley's three point ferry carried passengers across two river channels, connecting land on both banks of the Stones River with Neely's Bend on the north bank of the Cumberland River.

Three miles of Nature's best... provides a good description of the Stones River Greenway.  The start of the adventure is at the Percy Priest Dam Trailhead, and the end is at the Lebanon Road Terminus.  Eventually, this trail will connect with the Shelby Bottoms Greenway via a pedestrian bridge across the Cumberland River.

1 (MILE 0.0)

We approach the trail from the Stewarts Ferry Pike exit from Interstate 40.  Follow the signs to Percy Priest Dam where the Greenway begins.

stones167.jpg (33454 bytes) stones37.jpg (33115 bytes) stones166.jpg (63617 bytes) stones39.jpg (57809 bytes)

Looking down river you can see the I-40 bridge with its mindless traffic... not realizing what beauty lies underneath, this... just another bridge on their destinations to everywhere.

stones34.jpg (70829 bytes)
stones33.jpg (78007 bytes)

Portable toilets are available for pottie-trained bicyclers at the trailhead.

stones36.jpg (35806 bytes)

Percy Priest Dam looms large and overwhelms the skyline up-river from the start of the trail.

stones164.jpg (64222 bytes) stones31.jpg (25707 bytes) stones32.jpg (38534 bytes)

So, with a flourish, we say adieu to a-dam and peddle off down the trail.

2 (MILE 0.3)

At three tenths of a mile we encounter our first structure on the trail, the I-40 Bridge.  As we pass from bright sunlight into welcome shade we encounter a magic world of massive pillars and posts and feel the cool air rising from the rippling Stones River below our feet.

stones162.jpg (62301 bytes) stones62.jpg (80965 bytes) stones63.jpg (57536 bytes) stones61.jpg (99034 bytes)

A rushing side stream greets us at mile 0.80.

3 (MILE 1.5)

The trail splits here to the YMCA or the Lebanon Road terminus.

stones66.jpg (64360 bytes)

The trail splits at this point.

stones159.jpg (71114 bytes)

The trails half-way point is marked by majestic stone piers that once supported a railroad bridge across Stones River.

stones75.jpg (118728 bytes) stones70.jpg (61800 bytes) stones71.jpg (52162 bytes)

This might be a good point in the trail to sit and take a rest before pedaling on.

stones160.jpg (68355 bytes)

Huge rocks, looking like giant turtles, stand guard near the YMCA Trailhead exit from the main trail.  If you sit on a "turtle rock" and make a wish... It will most likely come true.

stones104.jpg (75493 bytes)  stones106.jpg (100124 bytes)

The left fork ends at the YMCA terminus (4 & 5).

stones79.jpg (88315 bytes)

The right fork leads to the Lebanon Road terminus (6 & 7)

stones67.jpg (88925 bytes)

About two tenths of a mile along the YMCA trailhead we are confronted by a rather testy upslope called... a hill.

stones84.jpg (31473 bytes) stones81.jpg (101234 bytes)

4 (MILE 0.5)

At about one half mile into the YMCA Terminus section, we encounter another split of the trail

stones88.jpg (71976 bytes)

At about the one half mile point of the side trail we again find a trail juncture.

stones91.jpg (70033 bytes)

To the left leads to Stewarts Ferry Pike

  stones89.jpg (56380 bytes) stones94.jpg (84847 bytes)

stones90.jpg (70183 bytes)

To the right the YMCA Trailhead

stones92.jpg (77469 bytes)

Some interesting abandoned farm buildings are sprinkled along the trail.

      stones93.jpg (73908 bytes) stones96.jpg (79892 bytes) stones7.jpg (88877 bytes) stones1.jpg (83638 bytes)

At mile 0.7 the trail makes a hard left turn and skirts the property of the Police Training Academy

donels2.jpg (39547 bytes)

As we approach the trailhead, the Police Academy is seen on the right

stones19.jpg (37879 bytes) stones12.jpg (36728 bytes)

The YMCA complex is to the left

stones20.jpg (44816 bytes)

4 (MILE 1.0)

At the one mile point from the main trail split we reach the YMCA Terminus and parking area.

stones18.jpg (66724 bytes)

The YMCA Trailhead is reached at about one mile from our exit at the Greenway. stones27.jpg (52092 bytes) stones21.jpg (30221 bytes) stones17.jpg (24756 bytes)

3 (MILE 1.5)

And meanwhile... back at the Main Trail Split we make tracks on the way to the Lebanon Road Terminus.

stones66.jpg (64360 bytes)

A short distance down the trail we encounter a road hazard sign.

stones111.jpg (90122 bytes)

stones110.jpg (43451 bytes)

After checking for "wet", we cautiously proceed on our quest.

stones112.jpg (84971 bytes)

At mile 1.7, we pass under an old steel railroad bridge perched high in the air
Imagine the surprise, on this mid-July day, with the temperature climbing into the mid '90's, finding a sign along the trail that stated...  "Warning... Ice on Trail 50 Feet Ahead"... Ah. but one could only wish...

You can look forward to this real huff-'n-puff hill a little beyond the halfway point on the quest for the Lebanon Road Trailhead.
Some lucky apartment complexes have their own private access to the Greenway.  stones125.jpg (76240 bytes) stones131.jpg (92114 bytes)

6 (MILE 2.5)

You may not be able to walk on water, put you can peddle just above the water on the boardwalk that hugs the river bank at mile 2.5.

stones151.jpg (86315 bytes)

stones126.jpg (75775 bytes) stones136.jpg (68839 bytes) You can really get up close and personal with the Stones River along this extended stretch of boardwalk positioned just above the water. stones128.jpg (111458 bytes) stones130.jpg (62797 bytes)
stones134.jpg (62159 bytes) stones138.jpg (64014 bytes) One of the most memorable sights along the trail occurred at the boardwalk.  Hundreds of fish... big fish, were resting quietly as if in a trance all along the boardwalk... where's your fishing pole when you really need it. stones132.jpg (38280 bytes) stones133.jpg (47349 bytes)

7 (MILE 3.0)

A toast with the old water bottle marks the end of the Greenway at the Lebanon Road Terminus... and the beginning of the way back to the car.

donel1544.jpg (34410 bytes)

At mile 3.00 we finally arrive at the temporary end of the trail, a juncture of Lebanon Road

stones142.jpg (48783 bytes)

A modern upscale shopping center borders the trailhead parking area

stones137.jpg (65618 bytes)  stones144.jpg (24841 bytes)  stones145.jpg (52330 bytes)

In earlier times, the whole area bordered by Stones river, encompassing the shopping center  was a part of Andrew Jackson's famous horse racing track.

stones23.jpg (22676 bytes)

Can't you just picture old Andy sliding down off his panting horse to grab a cup of coffee at Starbucks...

FLOWERS ALONG THE STONES RIVER GREENWAY
A close look at the small and strange reveals an abundance of natures wild flowers peeking up at us as we cruise by on our peddling machines.
