HISTORY of FRANKLIN ROAD Area
NOBLES CORNER
This 5 acres on the corner of Old Hickory Boulevard and Franklin Road was bought by A N Noble in 1920.  A registered pharmacist, he operated a drug store here for nearly 20 years when the pharmacy was converted to a restaurant by Albert's son Glenn Noble and his wife Iva Lee.  The restaurant continued under various managements until 1989.  The motel, also built and operated by the Noble family, opened in 1954.  Jean Noble Frank built a building on the property that was used for 20 years as Brentwood's post office

CIVIL WAR BATTLES
BATTLE OF NASHVILLE (Smith's Assault, December 16, 1864)
The Federal XVI Corps attacked southward along this road.  After violent artillery bombardment, McArthur's Division took the hill to the west about 4:00 PM, precipitating the rout of Hood's Army.  This hill is named for Colonel W M Shy, 20th Tennessee Infantry, killed in the desperate defense which he commanded.
HOOD'S RETREAT (December 16, 1864)
In this neighborhood, late in the evening of his decisive defeat at Nashville.  Hood reorganized his army for withdrawal southward.  Lieutenant General Stephen D Lee's Corps supported by Chalmers' Cavalry Division covered the withdrawal, fighting continuously until the army bivouacked near Spring Hill, 21 miles south, the night of December 17th.
BATTLE OF NASHVILLE (Stewart's Line, December 16, 1864)
Loring's division of Stewart's Corps, Hood's Confederate Army of Tennessee, fought behind this stone wall, December 16, 1864.  All Federal attacks were beaten back until the confederate line was broken a mile to the west.  The division retreated south through the hills toward Brentwood.
