| SMITHVILLE... VISITED July 2, 1999 |
| There truly is a hometown Mayberry. It is Smithville, Tennessee. We attended their Seventeenth Annual Jamboree on Friday, July 2, 1999. |
| The jamboree is held on the
square. During the opening commencement exercise the national anthem was
played on a fiddle over 200 years old. The musician coaxed the most
beautiful sound out of that fiddle you have ever heard in your life.
It features bluegrass at its best... and it happens on the fourth of July weekend, Friday and Saturday. . |
| The Jamboree is a competition of gospel singing, harmonica playing, old time banjos, fiddles in groups... and it is truly grand |

| The celebration touched the
very core of my soul. This is what America truly is... patriotic, the love
of God, and love of our country.
While the competition was on the stage we walked around the square. On the lawn, little groups of musicians were gathered together for a jam session, while waiting for their turn. We stopped by each group and listened. The expression and wear on some faces was so nostalgic. I thought that this part of America was gone... but it isn’t. There was such a warm feeling in my heart that I had to hold back tears at times. I felt as if I had been transported back in time and realized that some of the past truly exists now. In addition to buck dancing there was a dance called flat foot, which is the original hill dance. It was performed by an older gentleman. A young boy challenged him and I would have to say that the eleven year old matched him step for step. |

| People wore red, white and blue. There were many crafts and some were quite unique. It was a great big country street fair. The smell of food permeated the air. This was one of the most impressive events I have ever been to. |
| I felt love, safety and the
heart of America and if I could take your hand and lead you anywhere it
would be to this place, because you would not leave this event feeling the
same. You would leave it with renewed faith in mankind and in God because I
know this is one of the reasons he made us and loves us... or this was pure
love in itself. A gathering of God's gifted talents.
THIS IS FIFTH ON MY MUST SEE LIST ! (Cheri... the four year old) |
