HISTORY of GRUELTI LAAGER

In the 1860’s Europe was in the middle of a depression
In Switzerland, there wasn’t enough land to go around
The Swiss government saw emigration as a way to relieve overcrowding
The Swiss Emigration Society sent Capt Eugen Plumacher to America to locate land, 1867
Plumacher met with President Andrew Johnson
Johnson told him about his home state of Tennessee
Col John Armfield invited the delegation to visit his home in Beersheba Springs
The area reminded the Swiss group of forests in their homeland
Peter Staub a Swiss citizen living in Knoxville was hired to purchase land
100 acre tracts were subdivided for settlers
A 500 acre tract was set aside for a school and church
The land was advertised in Switzerland for $.50/acre
A group of immigrants formally established the colony on April 11, 1869
The town of Gruetli was created at the meeting
Town named after a famous meadow in Switzerland
ach tract of land was numbered and lots were drawn for land distribution among settlers
Because the colony was so large, two schools were built
The colony grew to about 100 families
It became an area of largest population of Swiss immigrants in the state
