HISTORY of GRUELTI LAAGER
| In the 1860s Europe
was in the middle of a depression In Switzerland, there wasnt enough land to go around The Swiss government saw emigration as a way to relieve overcrowding The Swiss Emigration Society sent Capt Eugen Plumacher to America to locate land, 1867 Plumacher met with President Andrew Johnson Johnson told him about his home state of Tennessee Col John Armfield invited the delegation to visit his home in Beersheba Springs The area reminded the Swiss group of forests in their homeland Peter Staub a Swiss citizen living in Knoxville was hired to purchase land 100 acre tracts were subdivided for settlers A 500 acre tract was set aside for a school and church The land was advertised in Switzerland for $.50/acre A group of immigrants formally established the colony on April 11, 1869 The town of Gruetli was created at the meeting Town named after a famous meadow in Switzerland ach tract of land was numbered and lots were drawn for land distribution among settlers Because the colony was so large, two schools were built The colony grew to about 100 families It became an area of largest population of Swiss immigrants in the state |
