RIVERPARK GREENWAY The Riverpark Trail along Chattanooga's waterfront and ending at Chickamauga Dam, a distance of about 8 miles, is a visual masterpiece. As your chief explorer and creator of this web site, I can attest that this is one of the most pleasurable bicycle rides that I can remember. Everything about the Riverpark Trail is first class with an endless variety of sights along its way. If you start at Ross Landing, downtown, expect a sharp climb to the Walnut Street Pedestrian Bridge, and afterwards only minor hills will confront your progress all the way to the Dam. One of the unique attributes to of this trail is the many historic markers that allows the user to merge with the past and drift back into different times. As you follow the trail on this site, links will transport you back into these different times to enjoy and savor. So, hop on the bicycle, put on the running shoes, or just plan a slow walk and lets get started. We'll begin where Riverpark starts... just west of Ross Landing, and work our way to its end at Chickamauga Dam. |

OLGIATI BRIDGE (Highway 27) In the 1950's, plans were put forward for the creation of a four-lane highway bridge that could serve the downtown area's increasing traffic problems. Begun in 1955, the Olgiati Bridge required not only a new structure across the Tennessee, but also a new highway near the downtown area. This new highway required the leveling of Cameron Hill (which, though many protested, was shortened over 150 feet) and the relocation of the residents of Blue Goose Hollow, on the flank of Cameron Hill. The bridge was completed late in 1959 and stood as the fifth river crossing to service the Chattanooga area. |
