Cherokee Indians lived in area from 2000 BC until 1300
Temple mounds were built northeast of intersection of Hwy 25 and Rock Springs Rd
A fort was built 1783 by Bledsoe
Thomas Spences, probably the first white settler in the area, spent the winter of 1778
Andrew Jackson raced horses in the bottom near Lick Creek

The spring was discovered by Isaac Bledsoe 1772
Isaac and Anthony Bledsoe and their families settled near spring 1787
The two brothers were killed by Indians and are buried 500 yards
northwest of spring
The Bledsoe Female Academy was founded near spring

Started 1798 and completed 1802 by James Winchester
Named Cragfont because it stood on a rocky bluff with a spring at its base
Probably the first totally rock structure to be completed in the state
First manor house west of the Allegheny mountains
Restoration began in 1956
Listed on National Register
Museum in home provides insight into culture and architecture of early 1800’s
Home furnished with authentic American Federal antiques, some original
from home
Locust Grove (Weathered House) Castalian Springs
Built 1817

Castalian Springs
Located nine miles east of Gallatin
Two stories tall and 142 feet long
Built in 1828
Served as a stagecoach inn and later as a mineral springs resort
Contains period furniture
A log cabin built on site in 1772 by William Bledsoe
Built as a Stagecoach Inn by Alfred Wynne 1828
The Union army occupied a fortified camp about one half mile to the southwest
Largest log structure built in Tennessee
It finally closed as a resort 1914
Listed on National Register and National Historic Landmarks
Open Daily (Closed Sundays in winter)
