HISTORY of UNION COUNTY

Established 1850
Organized February 6, 1854
Formed from portions of Anderson, Campbell, Claiborne, Grainger, and Knox Counties
Maynardville is county seat
Named for a strong feeling people of the area had for holding the Federal Union
Country music stars, Roy Acuff, Chet Atkins, and Carl Smith born in county

Named for Captain John (Racoon) Miller whose blockhouse stood near this site. Captain Miller, born in 1747 in Newberry County, South Carolina, served in the Washington County, Virginia, militia in 1776 before migrating to this area in 1777.
He married Eva Whitener in 1776 and died on August 25, 1832. He is buried in Ousley Cemetery, Union County.

 

PEOPLE of UNION COUNTY

Following the Civil War, Samuel Smith, an ex-slave and blacksmith, purchased 110 acres of Union County land.  In the 1880's, he established near this site the only school and church for blacks in the county.   Smith died on July 21, 1887, and was buried on his own property, which later became part of Butcher Cemetery, located 500 yards south of here.

Congressman J. Will Taylor was born in Lead Mine Bend. His first job at age 13, was tending a mule for 25 cents a day at the New Prospect Mine located here.  From 1917 to 1918 he was chairman of the Republican State Executive Committee. He was elected from the 2nd Congressional District to the U.S. Congress where he served from 1919 to 1939.   From 1929 to 1939 he was a member of the Republican National Executive Committee.  While in Congress for 20 years, he served during the terms of five presidents.
