HISTORY of PLEASANT HILL

 PLEASANT HILL TOWN SIGNS 
Pleasant Hill was incorporated in 1903. Pleasant Hill Academy, a secondary school, was founded here in 1884 by the American Missionary Association of the Congregational Churches to provide an education for the young people of the Cumberland Plateau. Its contribution enriched the quality of living throughout the region. Improved public schools caused the academy to close its doors in 1947.

HISTORIC PIONEER HALL
Mothers plea for a school to American Missionary Association led to founding
 Pleasant Hill Academy founded by American Missionary Association, 1884
 Incorporated 1903
Reverend Benjamin Dodge supervised construction of several school related buildings
Pioneer Hall part of original Academy		 Listed on National Historic Register
 Now houses museum
Wheeler Hall was girls dormitory
Farm bought to supply school with garden products and milk
A four year course was accredited by Southern College Association
Academy buildings sold to Cumberland County for Pleasant Hill School, 1947
Open May 1 to October 31
Located in Pleasant Hill Community
Building listed on National Historic Register, 1978
Houses memorabilia from Pleasant Hill Academy
Features history of county’s first hospital and dedicated physician, Dr May Wharton

Hospital opened 1922
Developed by Dr May Cravath Wharton
Widow of Academy Principal
Closed 1947 and moved to Crossville
Has grown into Cumberland Medical Center
After hospital moved, Dr Wharton helped develop a nursing home		 Dedication was 1957
Community now located on 500 acres
Is a not-for-profit community
Offers multiple options for retirement living
Private homes and condo’s available

Built by Dr May Wharton, founder of Uplands, 1850
Torn down 1989
