GREEN RIVER... VISITED 9-02-00

We arrived in Green River, Utah about mid afternoon and, of course had enough time for a rock hunt off Exit 147.  We bagged a few nice samples and discovered some great picture taking opportunities. wpeA36.jpg (4681 bytes) wpeA2B.jpg (3294 bytes) wpeA37.jpg (4250 bytes)

Our rock finds were outstanding with several color varieties of petrified wood. wpeA3A.jpg (9090 bytes) wpeA3B.jpg (14815 bytes)

The next day on an adventure at exit 180, we chanced a meeting with Pierre Prairie Dog, Chipper Chipmunk, and Ansey Antelope.

We found more hills and rocks... some with faces staring back at us. wpeA44.jpg (4986 bytes) wpeA59.jpg (2884 bytes) wpeA45.jpg (5027 bytes) wpeA47.jpg (3208 bytes) wpeA61.jpg (4342 bytes)
On a brochure we found at the camp ground office, we noted a site called Crystal Geyser a few miles from the town of Green River.  On the way out to the geyser, we passed some more scenic picture taking opportunities. wpeA64.jpg (3770 bytes) wpeA5F.jpg (4277 bytes) wpeA60.jpg (7595 bytes) wpeA62.jpg (5869 bytes)

Near the geyser, a giant dog-rock stood guard.

We arrived at the site over some rough gravel roads expecting just another ho-hum tourist attraction, but were overwhelmed at the awesome beauty that awaited.  It seems that back in the mid 1930's, an oil well was drilled here on the banks of the Green River, and instead of acquiring oil, the driller's got pressurized water... in the form of a geyser.  The eruption of the geyser occurs two or three times a day, and as we pulled into a parking area, it was beginning its "thing".
To follow is a  composite of  pictures that is in the must-see category

The high mineral content of the water has caused a brilliant orange build-up on the rocks as it flows into the Green River.

To the side of the main geyser were two intriguing pot-bubbling fountains.

The sun was intense the next afternoon, and the eight year old had this thing about getting showered by the geyser.  But alas... the geyser didn't want to geyse.  After about a 30 minute wait, the four year old stated impatiently... "Do you want to go, or do you want to wait?"  The eight year old replied... "Neither... I want this thing to go off!"  So we decided to collectively focus our concentrations on making the geyser let go, and within less than a minute the bubbling started in earnest and it shot skyward with all its beauty and fury... and, boy was it cold !!

On our last evening in Green River, we witnessed yet another classic western sunset, the type that we marveled at through out the whole trip.

SIGNS of the TIMES-  This lone picture was taken in a deep canyon somewhere in New Mexico.  There was no town nearby to describe it in the Images Section, so we just dropped it here at the end of Green River, UT.  Such a classic picture needs only the imagination to realize its significance.  The hardy soul who climbed down the treacherous canyon walls to plant the sign is to be commended for the "Image" he or she created.
