First settlers probably crossed
from Siberian Straights into what is now Alaska
They occupied the Florida area during the Pleistocene Era, about 10,000 to 12,000 BC When area was first settled, sea level was down about 350 feet from present time Starting about 9,000 BC, climate warmed, glaciers started melting, and sea level rose Early Archaic period began about 7,500 BC Middle Archaic period began about 5,000 to 6,000 BC and climate warmed more Human burials began during Middle Archaic period Late Archaic period began about 3,000 BC Settlers learned to make pottery about 2,000 BC Ponce de Leon arrived 1513 AD Florida admitted as a state on March 3, 1885 |
