KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLORIDA florid7.jpg (8872 bytes)

About 4:00 AM Thursday morning, we braved the cold weather, and made a dash south toward the hoped-for warmth of Florida.  Our first stop for the night was in Lake City, Florida.  In the morning the realization that the cold had followed us was shown by the ice on the windshield of the Tracker. florid20.jpg (6272 bytes) florid21.jpg (6506 bytes)
florid2.jpg (7635 bytes) florid3.jpg (5265 bytes) We arrived at the four year olds parents home in Palm Bay, Florida on Friday afternoon before the sun set.  When we stepped from the RV we both flapped our arms and told them that they couldn't hug us until they guessed what we were.  Mom said crows and Dad said Storks then I gave them a hint...  A lot of us come this way from the North...  Then they guessed it...  Snow Birds.   Let the visiting begin... !!

On Monday, we decided to visit the John Kennedy Space Center which used to be named Cape Canaveral.

NASA is trying to cut costs and have installed "guard birds" throughout  the complex.

When we arrived, there was impressive music blaring and plenty of room to walk.  We picked a very good day to visit... so off we went like school kids on a field trip.

florid23.jpg (3565 bytes) florid6.jpg (5140 bytes) florid44.jpg (5094 bytes) We traveled on a tour bus to three different stops.   There are 84,000 acres of land at the complex.  It also serves as a wildlife reserve, so we got to see alligators, a big eagle's nest, and other wildlife.  There is going to be a new shuttle launch on the 19th of January.

At one of our stops we were able to observe workers preparing equipment for the International Space Station.  It is going to be like 2001 A Space Odyssey but it isn't going to be finished by 2001.  We asked each other if any of us would volunteer to go up...  I wonder if you can guess which one of us was ready?... yep, the eight year old. florid24.jpg (6332 bytes) florid17.jpg (6871 bytes) florid41.jpg (2629 bytes)

We even had the opportunity to walk into Discovery, one of the space shuttles .  We stood in awe knowing that this craft had once been in space.  I have no idea why the astronauts didn't kill each other... being in the tight space they were squeezed into.  No privacy whatsoever. florid45.jpg (4942 bytes) florid35.jpg (6009 bytes) florid37.jpg (4419 bytes)
florid38.jpg (5077 bytes) florid39.jpg (5285 bytes) florid40.jpg (4606 bytes) The space center had two I-Max theaters and we watched movies in both of them.  We had a great day even though three of us were dragging when we came home...  eight year olds never wear out.
